Discussion: Alternative Modes of Exchange

This 3 course conversation hosted by public arts organization ‘No Longer Empty’ will look at non-monetary forms of exchange that are emerging in artistic and social practice.  Participants will discuss which alternative systems of exchange they have initiated and what has been effective, commenting on issues of ownership, relationship-building, performance, value and evaluation.
This discussion will take the ‘Long Table’ format in which participants will be seated at a long table, and served three ‘courses’ of conversation and questions. Dessert will be on the public, who will be invited to sit on the table and participate throughout the conversation.

Pueden los periodistas y los que hacen la noticia organizarse mejor para alcanzar sus metas?  A través de este taller con el cineasta de la Escuela de Periodismo Autentico, Greg Berger (conocido en México como “Gringoyo”) ha colaborado con movimientos sociales para crear estrategias efectivas para hacer y distribuir video periodístico. En este breve taller, veremos las películas más recientes de Gringoyo y hablaremos como y porque fueron creadas.  Así también exploraremos ideas para estrategia de medios para movimientos en los cuales estén involucrados los participantes.

Acerca del Presentador

Greg Berger, también conocido como “Gringoyo,” es un cineasta basado en Mexico, periodista y profesor de Cine en la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos. Berger, también se desempeña como director de Narco Noticias de TV. Desde 1998 ha hecho reportajes en movimientos sociales en Latino América. Su trabajo ha sido visto en museos, galerías y plazas en los cinco continentes, incluyendo al Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, el Museo Guggenheim, el Museo Getty, el Museo de Arte Moderno de la ciudad de Nueva York y en el Zocalo de la Ciudad de México. El tiene un sitio web www.gringoyo.com <http://www.gringoyo.com/>  y es el director de Narco Noticias TV. Anteriormente, trabajo como productor libre para la cadena Telesur basada en Caracas.

Workshop Making Media for the Movement

Can journalists and media makers help movements to become better organized and achieve their goals? Through his work with the School of Authentic Journalism, filmmaker Greg Berger (known in Mexico as “Gringoyo”) has collaborated with social movements to create effective strategies to make and distribute video journalism. In this brief workshop we will watch Gringoyo’s recent films and talk about how and why they were created, as well as brainstorm ideas for media strategies for movements that workshop participants are involved in.

 

About the Presenter

Greg Berger, known also as “Gringoyo,” is a Mexico-based filmmaker, journalist, and professor of film at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos as well as the director of Narco News TV. Since 1998 he has reported on social movements in Latin America. His work has been screened at museums, galleries, and town squares on five continents, including at the the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Guggenheim Museum, The Getty Museum, Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Mexico City Zocalo. He runs the website www.gringoyo.com <http://www.gringoyo.com/>  and is the director of Narco News TV. Previously, he worked as a freelance producer for Caracas-based network Telesur.
