Biography:
Jose Serrano-McClain was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in 1979. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Economics and Cultural Theory, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in English Literature in 2001.
He worked as an Economic Analyst at the New York Federal Reserve Bank for 5 years, where he developed his thinking on the social impact of arts and culture in creating holistic communities with a healthy economies.
In 2005, Jose resigned from the Fed to become a social entrepreneur and pursue those interests on the ground. He co-founded and still directs Trust Art, an initiative dedicated to creating self-sustaining communities around public art projects with the potential to create large-scale social and economic opportunities.
Trust Art has been Jose’s laboratory for his interest in the “economics of the creative spirit” and through it he has been invited to present at the TED Conference in California, the Feast Conference in New York, the Art Law Committee of the NYC Bar Association, and Independent Curators International, as well as having worked with many public artists on innovative ways to raise funds and create community around their visions.
Jose joined the Queens Museum of Art in 2010 in a special position created to bring together initiatives from both the Curatorial and the Community Engagement teams at the Museum, and involves bringing to life a new public art program called Corona Studio, as well as working with Corona community leaders on discovering a common agenda and some innovative ideas for the cultural and economic revitalization of the neighborhood.
